Founded in Italy in 2014 by a group of friends, Janghi is now composed of 2 associations - in Italy and in Senegal - whose mission is to support the fundamental rights of childre, using education as the main tool.
And, creating opportunities to get to know each other and to open up to each other.
THE CONTEXT AND OUR HISTORY
JANGHI is a phonetic adaptation of the word "Jàngi", which means "to go to school" in Woloff, the most widely spoken language in Senegal.
Our mission is to (re)integrate children who are excluded from the Senegalese secular school system, a phenomenon that is particularly widespread in Senegal. Almost half of school-age children do not go to school today.
The association was set up in 2014 by a group of Senegalese and Italian friends in Milan with two objectives: give the most vulnerable children in Senegal the opportunity to receive an education and create opportunities for exchanges and understanding between cultures.

On the other hand, the enthusiasm of this group of friends whose heterogeneity was an asset: our desire was not to rush to find immediate solutions but to create a lasting project by continuously informing ourselves about the situation to better understand cultural dynamics but also applying courage to denounce and act when the rights of the children were compromised.
We are a not-for-profit volunteer-based association established in Italy. Our objectives are mainly to raise awareness and funds for education projects in Senegal . We organise events to provide opportunities for discussion - cultural aperitifs, evenings with live music, Senegalese dinners, markets, sporting events and more - and we carefully monitor the work, use of resources and social impact generated through Janghi Senegal.
In Sénégal, a local association was gradually set up, which became a volunteer-run non-governmental organisation(Janghi NGO), recognised by the Senegalese Ministry of the Interior. It was created by members who had returned to Senegal, their friends and acquaintances, and gradually joined by others through word of mouth and awareness-raising activities.
Members now work on operational activities on site and are the daily reference for the students we support.
JANGHI intervenes autonomously with the collaboration of local structures for school insertion. All the structures are evaluated carefully to ensure they share our values and objectives. The establishments are diversified to better meet the needs of individual students: schools in disadvantaged neighbourhoods, schools for the disabled cihldren, schools that also collaborate through broader projects (hygiene, library, etc.).
A great runner and creator of the Janghi community in Genoa, Aldo is responsible for ensuring the transparency of the association and its proper management.
A nurse who has worked in Europe and Africa, Waly supports the association through its on-site health projects, as well as by continuously engaging members through her empathy.
A mother and engineer with a passion for life, she coordinates the association's activities in Italy and with Senegal, primarily Social Impact Measurement and Communication.
A tireless deejay and a great positive of life, Marco organises fundraising events in which he is always at the forefront, offering us his best music.
A well-balanced engineer and a connoisseur of the Senegalese context, Vincenzo supports in different areas with competence and creativity, always finding solutions to everything.
A world traveller, Federica works in the field of Communication creating content that can transfer Janghi's work and values to the world.

Co-founder Janghi led the association with passion and meticulousness for several years before moving to Senegal. Today she is a member of the inter-country coordination.

Meticulous and always ready to push Janghi further, Luciana is an activist who collaborates in several projects. For her, Janghi represents a cause without borders: children's rights.
School-age children are excluded from education. Of these, 80% have never been to school and 20% have dropped out.
Of the 15-17 year olds who do not go to school, this exclusion rate is 35% for 12-14 year olds and 20% for 6-11 year olds.
Of the children who start primary education, they leave school before they finish it, according to UN data (covering the whole of Africa). The problem therefore concerns not only the start of the course but also drop-outs.
